Ordino – UX/UI

The design of the Ordino app was an MA project. It is essentially a smarter call sheet system for the digital age, designed to replace the paper call sheets used in the film industry to summon cast and crew to specific locations for filming purposes, noting important information such as travel details, sunrise/sunset times, nearest hospitals and so forth. Whilst call sheets can be emailed etc. it is difficult to ensure that everyone knows about last minute changes, and errors occur which are potentially financially devastating for production companies working on a tight budget. Although some digital call sheet systems currently operate, they are not necessarily widely used or clear to the user.

‘Ordino’ was created with simplicity, speed and ease of use at its core. In addition, data and privacy must be secure and UX experience reliable. To achieve a streamlined and simplified experience, the app’s UI is as minimalist as possible, for instance by the incorporation of a header image for each call sheet which would be set by the filmmaker and personalised for each user, making it easier for actors and crew to navigate between sheets.

Following the brand guidelines, the app’s design focussed on a clean and easy to use UI design, e.g. allowing users to sign-up using a social media account from either Google+, Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter enabling them to join the user-base quickly and without deterring them with a form to complete. I also added a phone call feature to the app so that people could be contacted quickly or progress identified easily while on location. Furthermore, I have ensured that the most useful information is seen first on the preview page, such as start and end times, and designed the app with a profile page, enabling users to find each other. Additional features also aid UX by their simplicity and ease of use.

The creation of a moodboard helped cement my design ideas, enabling me to progress to wireframing and prototype processes, paying due attention to potential user feedback. I worked on the aesthetics of the app with UI in Illustrator and built prototypes in different design software such as InVision Studio and Sketch.

As the function of the app can be quite complex, and is certainly proven to be so using conventional methods, positive UI is critical. I ensured this by using simple, rounded icons to make it feel more friendly and less intimidating, and gave some of the buttons a muted glow to make UI feel rewarding and enticing when engaging in important tasks.
